The secret of Carlos's legendary hostel is generally spread by word of mouth, as a cherished piece of wisdom passed from one traveler to the next.  "Have you been to Mazunte? You have to go to Carlos Einstein's Hostel!  There's nothing else like it," backpackers frequently report to others they meet in their travels.

However, after nearly a decade, the hostel has also been discovered by the guidebooks. Here's what they have to say:

Let's Go Mexico:

Just a few blocks past the turtle center lies the short dirt path leading to Playa Mazunte, friendler than Zipolite, but not quite so calm as San Agustinillo. “Mazunte” is the magic word rolling off everyone’s tongue, accompanied by such phrases as “so chill” and “an unspoiled Zipolite.” Many claim that they had set aside a day for the beach, but that it stretched to two, then three, then a week, then five weeks. Time takes on a different meaning here, possibly because most of the backpackers hanging out here are high. Despite its popularity Mazunte is not yet overpopulated and good lodgings can be had cheaply. Although the rooms rented out at Carlos Einstein’s aren’t quite posh, they’re cheap, and you’re not going to meet such a character elsewhere on the coast. The owner looks like (surprise) a Mexican Einstein, but specializes in the science of herbal healing and brujería (witchcraft) instead of physics.

Le Guide Routard:

Carlos with his renowned personality, and magic hair, runs a hostel famous with backpackers. In a large open area, Carlos has place for a tent or hammocks, as well as several nets. The place is basic, but has a common kitchen. Not expensive at all, and the breakfast is included too!!!

Lonely Planet:

Hammocks, dorm beds, US$5 including continental breakfast.  Einstein's is run by an effervescent, eccentric ex-photojournalist name Carlos Aguilera.  The accomodations have fresh aire but are pretty tightly packed; the beds are small and hard but have mosquito nets.  You can use the kitchen for US$0.60 a day (free if you're sleeping in a bed).

AAA Mexico Travel Book:

Backpackers from all over the world talk about Carlos Einstein’s because it’s cheap, has a good atmosphere and it’s I front of the beach. The hammocks and beds $50.ºº p/person. The kitchen is free if you’re staying for the night and breakfast is included. There are job openings in the hostel for people who inquire.Carlos was a journalist, cameraman and is the firs International Chaman Curador Naturista. Great chef and very experienced about Mexico’s traditions and tourism.
